WHAT IS SCARWORK™?

Movement, sensations and proprioception improve by integrating scars into the fascial system.

Any surgical intervention, injury, or burn leaves an indelible scar on the skin. Adhesions are created in all tissues and the fascia is disorganized. Along with the aesthetic discomfort that a scar entails, there may be a lack of sensitivity and a restriction of movement, in addition to emotional involvement.

Surgeries as frequent as a cesarean section or appendicitis, even those performed with laparoscopy, create adhesions and limitations that are reflected throughout the body structure.

All scars, small or large, superficial or deep, recent or old, can benefit from a specific treatment. These treatments are applied within the framework of an individual session of integral structuring or in individual sessions exclusively dedicated to scars.

For the exclusive treatment of scars, the duration and frequency of the sessions are established according to each person.

WHAT IS SCARWORK™ THERAPY AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM CLINICAL MASSAGE?

ScarWork™ is a gentle, light-touch manual therapy that aims to improve the health, appearance, and mobility of scars by softening them and reducing tension in the surrounding tissues and the wider fascial network.

Developed by Sharon Wheeler, the therapy uses specific techniques to free up restrictions, promote the reabsorption of scar tissue, and normalize sensations like numbness or tightness.

ScarWork can be beneficial for scars from accidents, surgery, or other injuries, regardless of their age.

How it works

• Light Touch Techniques: Instead of deep pressure, ScarWork uses extremely light, specific strokes, gentle pulling, and stretching to work with the scar tissue.

• Working with the Fascia: The therapy helps to integrate scar tissue into the surrounding fascial network, which is a web of connective tissue throughout the body.

• Adapting to the Scar: The therapist adapts the touch to the specific scar and the client’s feedback, allowing the tissue to move as it wants and gently encouraging new movements.

• Stimulating Natural Processes: The work stimulates the body’s natural processes, helping to reconfigure the soft tissue and release tension that can extend far beyond the scar itself.

Benefits

• Reduces Pain and Discomfort: Softens tight, restrictive tissue and releases trapped nerves or blood vessels that cause pain.

• Improves Mobility: Increases range of movement by making scar tissue more supple and less tethered.

• Normalizes Sensation: Can restore feeling to numb areas and reduce excessive sensitivity.

• Enhances Appearance: Helps to make the scar tissue smoother and more integrated into the surrounding skin.

IS SCARWORK PAINFUL?

Unlike some scar therapies, ScarWork™ treatment is rarely painful.

The treatment is always given within the customer’s comfort level and it is common for customers to notice changes gradually after each session.

The treatments will be administered 1-4 weeks apart, depending on the age and presentation of your scar and the understanding of the changes you expect to achieve.

IS MY SCAR TOO OLD TO BE TREATED?

It’s never too late… We can treat a scar even if it’s decades old… Your body is constantly renewing cells, so even old scar tissue can respond to stimulation with ScarWork™ therapy.

However, I would recommend working on the scars as soon as possible to avoid the accumulation of scar tissue and possible complications such as adhesions.

You cannot work on a scar during the first 12 weeks or until the surgeon has discharged it. The scar must be healed, cleaned, and dried.
